In July 1996, I came back from NIADA's annual conference with a nice piece of green silk fabric. My new friend, the American artist Pattie Bibb and I had each bought half a piece, so that we could make a doll of our own with the same fabric and then compare the results.

Shortly after this trip, I found in a travel magazine this picture of old hands belonging an elderly woman. The symbolism of old hands holding a shiny red apple soon appeared to me as an unusual but powerful interpretation of death. Then, instead of depicting the dark figure which we generally associate with death, I dressed it with a long black cape but painted its face to look both warm and peaceful.

I used the green piece of silk for the dress and a pair of small antique gloves for the sleeves. An antique hair pin is used as a scepter. Finally, the red apple that attracts interest suggests that soul will survive out the end of life, and that life is eternally a part of death. Someone dies while someone is born...
