1. Processions*: A rhythmic selection inspired by the "an dro", a dance from Brittany. 2. Renuncio*: A piece for three violins, in memory of a friend and composer, Richard Pouliot. 3. Équinoxe*: Written in 10/8 tempo, the irregular rhythm is reminiscent of Eastern European "aksaks". Composed for a spring equinox, it is played with a touch of tablas (drums from India). 4. Hanter dro des petits cochons*: "The piglets' hanter dro" is another tempo of dance from Brittany. 5. Montjoie!/ Les Étoiles filantes*: "Montjoie!" was a rallying cry in France in the XIIth century. This arrangement has a medieval flair, and is played on a wheel fiddle (sometimes called a hurdy-gurdy) and violin. It is followed by Les Étoiles filantes , or "The Shooting Stars" . 6. Athanor*: This composition can be seen as a musical "mandala". Its title became our group's name. The "athanor" is an alchemist's crucible, in which the Philosopher's Stone is made, among other things... 7. Danse du feu* (or "Fire Dance"): Another "aksak", this time in 7/8 tempo. 8. Hommage à Peter Chalmers**: In memory of an excellent guitarist, played on his guitar. The violin adds improvisations. 9. Le Métayer**: The only song on the album, a tribute to farmers; accompanied by wheel fiddle, violin, mandola... 10. Flammes/ Danse des spectres* (or "Flames/Ghosts' dance"): The first piece is slow and mysterious. One can imagine ghosts and skeletons dancing together in the following dance. 11. Adieux à Brocéliande*: Brocéliande was Merlin's forest. When Christianity sounded the death knell of Celtic domination, the world of fairies could no longer coexist with ours.
*: composed by Martine Chiasson **: composed by Michel Bordeleau All arrangements by Martine Chiasson. |
